The spectrum of virtual reality technologies can be experienced through different equipment that balances quality and portability in a fine play of relationships. Learn more in this article.

When we walk through the “real world,” a series of sensations and interactions with our environment inform us about what is happening, allowing us to navigate the world with freedom of action. Our senses of touch, smell, hearing, and sight enable us to exist and understand our choices at every moment.

In the digital world – regardless of the environment you are accessing – these senses remain alert and responsible for the immersion of virtual reality. Sounds, textures, and movement capabilities all contribute to the quality of the virtual reality experience.

In the interplay between quality and interactivity, factors such as the presence of hands and head movement are fundamental to enhancing immersion. Simple actions like reaching out, touching an object, or even crouching, rolling, or jumping, enhance the experience.

From a more technical perspective, each type of equipment provides a specific composition of these factors. Understand more below.

Types of VR Equipment

The three main types of VR headsets offer unique definitions of portability and quality.

  • Phone Headsets: this is the oldest model for portable virtual reality. It consists of a headset that attaches to a mobile phone. This model still persists in the market but offers little interaction and lower quality compared to more modern headsets. A person using a phone headset has limited movements, such as looking around without moving their head within the simulation.

  • Standalone Virtual Reality: the biggest innovation of the Standalone headset is its portability. It does not need to be connected to a computer or mobile phone to function and provides even greater degrees of freedom of movement and interaction within virtual reality. It is possible to turn and interact with the digital world in 360º.

  • PC-based Virtual Reality: PCVR headsets offer the highest quality in terms of digital experience. This is due to the high processing capacity of computers.

According to this classification, we see that PCVR is the equipment with the highest quality. However, a new trend that promises to change this scenario is connectable standalone headsets. This new model is a more practical and universal device that can operate independently or be connected to a computer, combining portability and quality in the creation of 3D realities.
